Take Care Of Your Tires

Roads can be difficult in Colorado. In the harsh winter months, they can be downright treacherous. That's why tire maintenance is so critical. Make sure your Ultimate Driving Machine® is ready with a premier set of tires, rims, and wheels. Additionally, now's the perfect time for an inspection to ensure you're up to par for the rigors of Colorado's demanding weather.

BMW of Denver Downtown would like to offer the following facts for you to know your tires!

Snow Tires vs. All Weather Tires

Snow tires are cold-weather tires and as the name implies, do their best work in the snow. Their tread design adapts to road conditions allowing better grip and handling. Snow tires are made of a compound of flexible rubber and contain silica, which help the tires remain flexible in cold weather. The treads are substantially deeper and made to dig more deeply into the compacted snow. Additionally, there are slits in these tires (called sipes) and they expand and flex when on the ground, preventing sliding while adding control and shortening stopping distance.

On the other hand, all-weather tires can be left on the car all year round. All-weather tires are suited for city driving under milder winter weather conditions. These tires provide the traction you need for weekend adventures, as well as a good grip on wet and slushy urban roads.

Tire Rotation

Under normal driving conditions, it's recommended that you rotate your tires every 3,000 to 5,000 miles to maintain proper wear and tear. A good reminder is to have your tires rotated when you have the oil in your vehicle changed. However, if you use synthetic oil and drive longer between oil changes, then follow the 3,000- to 5,000-mile rule.

As for when to change your tires, use the quarter test. Place a quarter head first into several tread grooves across the tire. If you can see the top of Washington's head, your treads are shallow and worn. If so, your tires need to be replaced. If part of Washington's head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 1/8 of an inch of tread depth remaining!

Regular Maintenance And Its Effects

Just like every other part of your vehicle, your tires need regular maintenance. Proper inflation, the quarter test and checking the sidewall for damage is crucial.

Performing regular maintenance on your tires improves fuel efficiency and makes your tires last longer. Long-lasting tires save on costly repairs. Properly maintained tires also respond better to braking. Bald tires have no traction and thus can lead to longer braking distances, which can lead to an accident. Lastly, taking care of your tires reduces the chances you'll have a flat tire on a dark, deserted road on a cold, rainy night.
