What's New for the 2024 BMW 4 Series?

The 2023 BMW 4 Series gets a few changes for this year, with some minor cosmetic options and updated tech for the latest model year.

The iDrive 8.5 system debuts this year, and with it comes a new interface that should feel much more familiar. For one, gesture controls are gone, replaced by a more intuitive voice-activated system. In addition, customizing the display is similar to modern smartphones, where  you press, hold, and drag icons to organize them as you wish.

Other feature upgrades for 2024 include:

  • Optional Blue or Red M Sport brake calipers
  • Heads-up display only available on the M440i
  • Parking Assistance Package now available
  • Faux-leather dash upholstery now standard

Exterior Design

The new BMW 4 Series features several bold design touches that set it apart from the rest of the new BMW lineup. The oversized BMW kidney grilles sit vertically rather than horizontally, giving the 4 Series an aggressive face that is truly unmistakable. Meanwhile, the sloping roofline makes it feel incredibly athletic, while the long hood and short tail give it a sporty edge.

You'll have three body style options to choose from with your new 4 Series as well. The classic two-door coupe makes it feel like a true sports car, while the four-door Gran Coupe feels a bit more grown up. And with the convertible option, you'll get to enjoy the mountain air with the top down all summer long.

Interior Design

The cabin design of the new BMW 4 Series is simple and elegant, placing emphasis on keeping things clean and crisp. A silver accent line sweeps toward the center stack, highlighting the simple row of buttons that sit below the center air vents. You'll find some unique angles here that give the 4 Series a more modern, technical feel. And with standard ambient interior lighting, the dash lines and footwells are gently lit in a variety of colors to provide a satisfying glow for your nighttime drives.

There are two distinct performance options for the BMW 4 Series, so choosing the one that best fits your driving style is important. The standard kit is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that churns out 255 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.

That's an exciting powerplant in its own right, but those who want a high-performance experience may want to choose the BMW M440i. This model comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder powertrain that develops 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Plus, it comes with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to help save fuel while city driving by providing and electric boost as you take off from a stop. The M440i also gives you the M-Sport body kit, sport-tuned suspension, and rear-wheel drive performance for that true sports car feel.

The new 4 Series features BMW's digital instrument cluster that feels like a step into the future. Not only can you see the standard dials, but you can customize the views to see a wealth of performance data, navigation information, and more.

The central infotainment display can be controlled by voice or by gestures, and either way you can better focus on the road ahead while you're making your adjustments. In addition, the new iDrive 8.5 interface introduces a more smartphone-esque system, with a similar mechanism for customization. Simply hold an icon and you can move your preferred functions to the homepage for easy access.

The new BMW 4 Series comes with a wealth of standard safety features, including both forward collision alert and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection - helpful for driving in Downtown Denver traffic. Lane keep assist also comes standard, as does adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assistant - both perfect for long trips on I-25. Optional add-ons include blind spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and rear cross traffic alert.
