January 2013 | Recall Campaign No. 12V-550: Engine Belt Idler Pulley Bolt
Dear BMW Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
BMW AG has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year 2009-2012 BMW X5 xDrive 35d (Diesel) Sports Activity Vehicles. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected vehicle.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM
This Recall involves the engine belt idler pulley bolt. The engine belt idler pulley bolt can loosen. Over time, loosening of the bolt could lead to additional bending forces on the bolt. Eventually, these additional forces could cause the bolt to break. This would result in a sudden loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
DESCRIPTION OF REPAIR
The idler pulley bolt will be replaced and tightened with a revised procedure. A thread lock coating on the bolt will also be included.
The actual repair will require approximately two hours; however, additional time may be required, depending on the BMW center's schedule. This work will be performed free of charge by your authorized BMW center.
Contact your Authorized BMW center immediately to have the necessary repair performed as soon as possible.

December 2012 | Recall Campaign No. 12V-504: Soft Close Automatic Door Function
Dear BMW Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
BMW AG has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year 2005-2008 7 Series vehicles equipped with the Comfort Access option. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected vehicle.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM
This Recall involves the "Soft Close" door function of your vehicle. Due to errors in the vehicle software that affect the Soft Close function, the door may not latch when attempting to close it. This condition would be noticeable. If you then held the door closed in an attempt for it to latch, the door could appear to close and latch even though it did not.
When driving off, an irregular road surface, inadvertent interior contact with the door, or other such external condition could lead to an unexpected opening of the door. This may result in occupant ejection, or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
DESCRIPTION OF REPAIR
The vehicle software will be updated.
The actual repair will require approximately four hours; however, additional time may be required depending on the BMW center's schedule. This work will be performed free of charge by your authorized BMW center.

December 2012 | Recall Campaign No. 12V-502: Rollaway
This Recall involves the keyless ignition system of vehicles equipped with the Comfort Access option. When parking (P) a vehicle in Comfort Access mode (the key has NOT been inserted into the key slot on the vehicle's instrument panel), drivers may inadvertently press the Start/Stop button more than once and in rapid succession. Pressing the Start/Stop button in this fashion may trigger an "emergency mode"* and cause the transmission to automatically shift to Neutral (N), not Park (P). If the driver did not notice this shift to Neutral (N), and opened the door to exit the vehicle, audible and visual warning signals would be activated to alert the driver that the transmission is still in Neutral (N). If these warnings are ignored or are not noticed and the vehicle is left in Neutral (N), it could roll away and strike a person or property, causing personal injuries and/or property damage.
BMW is reminding all owners that the Start/Stop button should only be pressed one time when either starting or stopping the vehicle. Otherwise, if the vehicle is operating in Comfort Access mode (the key has NOT been inserted into the key slot on the vehicle's instrument panel), the transmission could shift to Neutral instead of Park if the Start/Stop button is pressed more than once and in rapid succession.
*Emergency mode will shut off the engine, shift the transmission to Neutral, and allow the vehicle to be towed or pushed after coming to rest.
DESCRIPTION OF REPAIR
BMW is currently in final testing of the repair. The repair will entail an update of the vehicle software.

November 2012 | Recall Campaign No. 12V-475: Engine Oil Pump
Dear BMW Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
BMW AG has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year 2013 BMW M5, M6 Coupe and M6 Convertible vehicles. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected vehicle.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM
This recall involves the engine oil pump. Due to a manufacturing error at the pump supplier, the pump was not produced to specifications. As a result, a sudden loss of oil pressure could occur. If this happened, this would cause severe engine damage and the possibility of complete engine failure while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
If there is a sudden loss of oil pressure, a low oil pressure warning indicator illuminated in red and message "Engine oil pressure: Stop carefully" will be displayed in the instrument cluster. An additional warning message will be displayed in the vehicle's control display as follows: "Engine oil pressure too low: Stop carefully and stop engine. Risk of engine damage with continued driving. Call Roadside Assistance."
DESCRIPTION OF REPAIR
The oil pump will be replaced.
The actual repair will require approximately two and one-half hours; however additional time may be required depending on the BMW center's schedule. This work will be performed free of charge by your authorized BMW center.
BMW recommends that you do not continue to drive your vehicle. Contact your Authorized BMW center immediately to have the necessary repair performed as soon as possible.

July 2012 | Recall Campaign No. 12V-267: Steering Gear
Dear BMW Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
BMW AG has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year 2012-13 BMW X5 SAV and Model Year 2013 BMW X6 SAC vehicles. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected vehicle.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM
The issue involves the steering gear. Due to a machine process error at the supplier, a snap ring in the steering gear housing can loosen during vehicle operation. This would lead to leakage of power steering fluid flowing into the rubber boot of the steering gear, causing a pressure loss in the hydraulic system.
The result is a loss of power steering assist. Steering function will be maintained; however, the effort required to steer the vehicle will be significantly higher.
In some cases, power steering fluid can spray onto hot exhaust components. Therefore, an engine compartment fire may occur.
DESCRIPTION OF REPAIR
The steering gear will be inspected and, if necessary, also replaced.
The actual repair will require approximately one day; however, additional time may be required depending on the BMW center's schedule. This work will be performed free of charge by your authorized BMW center.
